COURSE DESCRIPTION

COURSE OVERVIEW

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has become the preferred procedure for visualizing internal organs of the body for the purpose of diagnosing diseases or abnormal conditions. The MRI examination requires the use of a powerful, constant magnetic field, rapidly changing local magnetic fields, radiofrequency energy, and sophisticated computer equipment to create detailed images of internal body structures.

When entering the room that houses MRI scanning equipment, clinical and ancillary staff must be aware that the magnet is ALWAYS turned on thereby creating an ever-present powerful magnetic field that poses important safety considerations for all persons entering the area.

Course material will address the following:

  • General principles of MRI safety.
  • The "missile effect" - how ordinary objects can be transformed into lethal projectiles in the presence of the MRI magnet.
  • Identification of ferromagnetic, magnetically activated and electrically conductive implants which are not MRI compatible.
  • Screening procedures for patients, visitors and staff.
  • Location of magnets on campus.
